Bharath Dance Tradition

The "Bharatha" dance tradition can be identified as one of the oldest dance traditions in India. It is native to the Thanjavur region of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In the early days, this dance tradition was performed by the nuns called Deva Dasin before the god of things called Dasi Attam. Some believe that Baratha Muni's book "Natya Shastra" was written about Baratha dance.

According to Bharatamuni, drama is the act of imitating the existence of the world in four different gestures. Here, a story, event or occasion is presented through the gestures of body language, verbal, satirical and Aharya. Examples of episodes such as Kuravanji and Bhagavatha Mela in Bharatha dramas.

As soon as Devadasin began to use this dance form for the gods in social ceremonies, it caused confusion and some kind of decline in the dance. The four brothers Chinnaiah, Ponnaiah, Vadivelu and Sivanathan, who lived between A.D 1798 - 1824 , are credited with arranging the chaotic art of Bharatha today. These four brothers are known as the Thanjavur brothers.

This dance tradition was later brought to the attention of the aristocratic families in the society. The dance is performed by Anna Pavlova, Rukmani Devi Arundale, Menaka, Kumari Kamala and Mirnalini.

Rukmani Devi Arundale started an institute called 'Kala Kshetra' for the first time to teach Bharata dance, and her teacher Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and her teachers strengthened the work of taking Bharatha dance to the elite society. The Institute of Arts has become one of the most prestigious institutions in the field of the subject.

This dance tradition is now gaining popularity around the world. It includes various dance elements. Jetheeswaram, Alarippu, Shabdam, Varnam, Padam, Tillana are some of them.
