Kandyan Dance Tradition

 


Kandyan dance tradition can be identified as one of the foremost indigenous dance traditions in Sri Lanka. This dance tradition is spread in Kandy, Udu Nuwara, Hewaheta, Nuwara Kalawiya, Kegalle and Mawanella.

The Wes Anduma can be identified as the main costume of this dance tradition. This dress is very elegant. This wardrobe includes a lot of beautiful jewelries from head to toe. 


 Gatabera can be identified as the key word in this dance tradition. This has more names. They are the Kandyan drum. The length of this drum is three and a half knots. The shoots of Kohomba, Jackfruit, Ehela and Gansuriya are used for this purpose. Cattle skins, monkey skins and goat skins are used for privileges and drum eyes.In this dance tradition can be identified many different dance elements. Vannam, Vattam, Yak Anuma, Avanduma, Malhath Padaya, Kothala Padaya, Asne, Hathpada Pelapali, yakkam, Dhana Paha, Katha Paha are some of them.

Kohombayak Kankari Shantikarma can be identified as the main Shantikarma of this dance tradition.Also, Magul Bera and Athya Bera can be identified as the occasion when the instrument of this dance tradition is played using the Geta Bera.


There are many rituals in this ritual.This Shantikarma can be identified as a place where all the dances of the Kandyan dance tradition came together. A large group of dancers is required to perform these rituals. This ritual is performed until nightfall.
